Heating and ventilation fitters install heating, ventilation, air conditioning and extraction systems in all types of domestic, industrial and commercial buildings including:

• homes
• factories
• hospitals
• offices
• shops

They may install these systems in new construction projects or upgrade and repair the systems already existing in buildings. These systems can range from chilled water air conditioning and/or central heating to pipework for transportation of natural gas.

Fitting involves the installation of boilers, radiators, pumps and pipework. Fitters and welders work to detailed plans and specifications to accurately lay out each components location, the type and quality of pipework required and the location of all joints and bends. Fitters work with a variety of materials including steel, copper, iron and plastic, and they need to have a very good understanding of the properties and limitations of each.

Once installed, they test all the systems before they are put into active use. Some fitters may also be involved in setting up any service and maintenance programmes that may be required by their clients.

Heating and ventilation fitters work closely with the ductwork installers who build and repair the ductwork infrastructure within buildings. This role is sometimes combined with refrigeration and air conditioning installation.
